New design concept from DeBasto/Hodgdon

DeBasto Designs and Hodgdon Shipbuilding released an innovative design concept – the Onyx 41.

A beautiful, stylish design, Onyx is as easy to operate as it is to look at. From touch screen controls to remote monitoring, Onyx sets a new standard of technology applications in a yacht of this size. A host of innovative features such as a self-deploying integrated fender system, built-in dock line handling and user-friendly features including hybrid electric propulsion and joystick steering bring owner-operator convenience to a new level.

And if the sophistication of the features alone is not enough to impress, consider the level of luxury aboard. A generous open plan space below features a large berth, wrap around settee, galley and head with surprisingly creative dual opening skylights above.

On deck, the open-air concept, semi-enclosed deck lounge opens dramatically to the outside world with a multiple-panel, sliding skylight roof. Integrated monolithic furniture runs nearly the full length of the available space, offering ample stylish seating and lounging.

Both interior and exterior furnishings are client- tailored luxury weather and stain-resistant fabrics from the Interiors Division of Loro Piana. The concept of Onyx is not simply about style, it is also about execution. Execution with standards befitting the world of superyachts where the demand for quality is second to none. To achieve such a standard, Luiz turned to Hodgdon for the answer. With a nearly 200-year pedigree that includes some of the world’s finest superyachts and superyacht tenders, advanced composite expertise and the in-house engineering to transition design into production, Hodgdon rose to the top of the list easily. “Although not widely known, Hodgdon’s quality is amazing, truly first class, which is our vision for Onyx, a perfect fit“, says Luiz DeBasto of his choice of shipyard collaboration.

Onyx is expected to be built in very limited quantities for only the most discriminating of owners.

Hodgdon Yachts delivers two more tenders

13130084-2

This pair of 8.5m beauties was designed by Andrew Winch Designs of London, with naval architecture and engineering by Hodgdon’s own in-house engineering team. The pair was specially engineered and constructed using infused epoxy carbon fibre construction to meet the client’s demanding weight requirements.

The limousine tender features the exceptional craftsmanship and sophisticated systems engineering that Hodgdon is so well known for.  Outside, a defining characteristic of the AWD design is a compound curve teak clad transom exceptionally executed. Inside, the full wood raised panel teak joinery interior features separate lavatory and wash basin lockers with luxury leather seating for up to 8 guests. Systems highlights include NEMA 2000 systems integrated iPad in the salon, electrically retracting glass moon roof, electrically retracting glass aft bulkhead, hydraulically lifting roof, lithium ion smart battery system and more.

The open tender, a companion to the limo tender, features open seating for 12, a retracting hardtop over the helm (for clearance into the mother ship tender garage) and a special AWD-designed and Hodgdon-engineered retracting bow ramp for beach and shore-side guest boarding convenience. Both tenders are in transit to a significant shipyard in Holland where they will join the mother ship launching soon.

HODGDON was commissioned to build a 10.5 limousine tender and slightly smaller matching open tender for then Oceanco Y706 (7 Seas). The success of that Michael Peters Yacht Design (Sarasota, FL) project turned heads in superyacht ports the world over. HOODGDON has developed several tender concepts ranging from 9.6m to 12.5m in the MPYD aesthetic including an aft helm version and is currently in contract negotiation for several other tenders including from other world class designers.

SCHEHERAZADE wins at Hodgdon Shipyard Cup X

SCHEHERAZADE skillfully outmaneuvered the fleet to take first place honors and winner overall at Shipyard Cup X.

True to the spirit of the event, the “winner overall trophy” was an engraved bucket and large bottle of Dom Pérignon. The bucket was filled with champagne and passed around to the winning crew. SCHEHERAZADE’s owner drew great cheers from the crowd as he took his turn.

In Sunday’s event, SCHEHERAZADE was followed by RAPTURE and WHISPER in the daily results, in which the boats and the race committee were able to take advantage of breaks in the fog to complete day 2’s racing. Due to an error in calculating starting times for the pursuit start of Saturday’s race, the results were not used to calculate the overall winner of the Shipyard Cup.

The final order of finishing for Sunday’s race and the overall results was: SCHEHERAZADE (154′), RAPTURE (100′), WHISPER (67′). VIRAGO (99′), TENACIOUS (115′), SUMURUN (94′) and WHEN AND IF (64′).

SUMURUN was the recipient of the annual Clew Award for managing to board their charter guests underway 2 minutes before their starting time and still crossed the line 1.5 seconds after the gun.

In keeping with the fun spirit of the event, race organizers also awarded some other prizes:

The FULL MOON AWARD to BOO TOO for aiming a moon-like object at the event photographer Billy Black.

The BEST DUCK BOAT IN BOOTHBAY AWARD to TENACIOUS for her owners sounding duck calls as they left the harbor.

The BEST START “POSSIBLY” UNDER POWER AWARD to the 1939 Schooner WHEN AND IF.

The WINGIN’ IT AWARD to RAPTURE for their “wing and wing” downwind run on day 1.

The BEST MAINE UNIFORM AWARD to the Captain of VIRAGO for sailing in a terrific authentic Maine flannel shirt.

The BEST SMOKE AND MIRRORS AWARD to SCHEHERAZADE for their “fake jibe”, which smoked their nearest competitor.

The BEST SPIRIT OF THE REGATTA award to the SUMURUN for starting day 2 in Flintstones’ costumes.

The WHERE’S TITO AWARD, in honor of Shipyard Cup sponsor, Tito’s Handmade American Vodka, for the person who shall remain nameless that “borrowed” the full size poster of Tito himself.

Despite the challenging weather conditions, the event ended on an upbeat note with many racers looking forward to the 2013 event.

Shipyard Cup XI is scheduled to be held 9 – 13 August 2013
